Rest for the Weary

Posted on: 7-15-112017

Anyone who has been around babies for very long knows that the phrase “sleeps like a baby” can be a bit unrealistic for some babies. These little ones fight sleep with every fiber in their being. They will almost wrestle you to the death before giving in. They may seem extremely hyperactive because they are moving nonstop just to keep themselves from getting still because they know that, once they are still, it’s lights out. As they get more and more exhausted and in need of sleep, they can become easily agitated, cranky, and very hard to deal with. No matter what you do to try and comfort them, it doesn’t help the situation. The only thing that will help them is rest and that is the thing they are fighting against the hardest. A lot of us behave in a similar way in our spiritual life. We need to take time to just “rest” in the presence of Jesus, but we have ourselves so wound up that we can’t be still. We need to take time to relax and allow God to restore our energy, strengthen our sounds, and heal our hurts. But, we fight against Him. He is the only One who can bring us rest, but we are so busy being busy that we don’t allow Him to do the very thing we need. And we end up like the sleep deprived baby…easily agitated, cranky, and hard to deal with! Allow yourself to rest in the Father’s arms…often it is all you need!

“Come to Me all you who labor and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
