Guilt Free

This weekend, many of us celebrated Mother’s Day, so my mind has been on moms and everything that being a mom entails! No matter what our circumstances, no matter how many children we have, and no matter where we are along our parenting journey, there are some things that, for the most part, moms share in common. Moms love their children unconditionally, sacrificially, and without hesitation. That love is formed long before she ever lays eyes on her bundle of joy. Moms protect their children at any cost. Moms nurture and care for their children with a passion unlike any other you will find on this planet. Moms do everything they can for their children. And moms worry! They worry about every single thing imaginable regarding their children. It all starts in the womb. Natural birth vs anesthesia vs C-section, home birth vs hospital birth, breastfeed vs bottle feed, rock the baby to sleep vs let them learn to put themselves to sleep, sleep alone vs co-sleep, pacifier vs no pacifier, homemade baby food vs store bought baby food, sugar vs no sugar, vaccinate vs no vaccinations, home school vs private school vs public school…the list goes on and on and on. Ever decision seems as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders and if you make a mistake, you just know your child/children will be scarred for life. You worry, you fret, you research, you worry some more because you discover even more things you hadn’t thought about when you research the thing you were researching. It’s a vicious cycle and, at this point, we’ve only made it to preschool! Add peer pressure or well intentioned friends/family to this equation and we have a recipe for disaster! Everyone you know that has a child your age is a constant reminder that you may not be measuring up! Their baby is already crawling, walking, talking, feeding themselves, is fully potty trained, writing their name, etc. Your friend’s child is so well behaved, her house is always spotless, and she looks like she just stepped out of a photo shoot, but you can’t even manage to take a shower every day! She feeds her child only organic foods, but your doing good to get a frozen pizza cooked. She never seems frazzled or tired, and you never seen anything but! Motherhood is definitely not for the faint of heart! It’s a 24/7 job and it doesn’t get any easier as you become more experienced. And if you allow it, the guilt will consume you and sick every ounce of joy out of motherhood. Our relationship with Christ is no different. We can compare ourselves to other and allow guilt and condemnation for how we don’t measure up to destroy us. We can allow it to hinder our relationship with Christ  because it takes all of the joy out of it. Jesus died to TAKE AWAY your sin, not to condemn you for them. Let Him!

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1
