Pressing Forward

Posted on: 7-15-112017

Last week, I was watching the TV program, “Chopped”, in which chefs compete to win a $10,000 prize. One of the competitors was a young dad and he said his motive to compete were his children. He shared that he had come from a very rough background and cooking had been the thing that turned his life around.  He said he wanted to win the show as proof to his children that where he came from didn’t matter, but that where he was going was what was important. I think a lot of us would agree with this philosophy in word, but when it comes to our actions, we probably get stuck in our past more than we need to. While we definitely can learn from our past, God never intended for us to set up camp and stay there permanently.

“…but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

God wants us to put the past in the past and leave it there. He knows that digging up all of the regrets, mistakes, failures, disappointments, and things we should’ve done differently are not going to move us closer to the future He has for us. He knows that if we are bogged down in what we did wrong, we will never take the steps forward to do what He has called us to do. He knows that if we focus on how many times we have failed, we will never rise up in victory. No matter how tattered your past may be, God has the power to take it and make your present and future magnificent. No matter how grievous your sins may be, God’s forgiveness wipes the slate clean. No matter how far away from God you have run, His grace and mercy reaches even farther. He has called  you to a life full of promise, blessing, and abundance. He has a prize of infinite value waiting for you…much more valuable than the $10,000 prize offered on the TV show. Your goal is to forget what’s behind you and go get what He has in front of you!
