One Desire

Have you ever felt like your prayers to God were similar to a shopping list?  You know, something along the lines of the following:

“Okay, Lord…today, I need healing for my loved one from the illness they are battling.  I also need the money to help pay the bills for the rest of this month.  Let’s see, I also need wisdom to know how to handle my rebellious teenager.  Oh, and some peace would be nice as we face some uncertainty with my spouse’s job.”

The list can go on and on. By the time we finish praying, if we truly think about our prayers, we have told God everything we need, much like what we would write on a shopping list.

“I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.” Psalm 27:4

David had a little different approach to his prayer in the verse above.  There was only one thing David asked of the Lord and the was to dwell in His house all the days of his life.  When I read this verse earlier today, it struck me that, if that one request was granted,  David had all that he would ever need.  Since God desires nothing more than to be with us, I can guarantee that He would grant David’s request.  The same is true for us…if we requested the same thing from God that David did, He would certainly answer us with a resounding, “YES!” And we, like David, would have everything we needed if we just had God.   Now, none of this is to say that we shouldn’t pray for other things, but just think about it this way: if we had God, we would know without a shadow of a doubt that we could handle any and every situation no matter what the outcome was.  We would know His peace, His security, His strength, and His hope.  And in knowing Him, we would have faith that was unshakeable, immovable, and able to face anything that came our way.
