Hope in the Midst of Despair

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.  I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.’ The Lord is good to those who hope in Him, to the one who seeks Him.” Lamentations 3:22-25

I recently read a blog about the above verses and the writer said something about them that I don’t think I’ve every given much thought.  She pointed out that the writer who penned these verses wrote them in a book of sadness.  The very name of the book, Lamentations, speaks volumes about its content.  However, in the midst of great sadness, we find these four verses which are anything but sad.  These verses breath hope and life into the reader.  They remind us that no matter what our circumstance or environment may be, we have the Lord’s favor.  We may be consumed with the most heart-wrenching situations and our eyes may not be able to do anything except pour forth tear after tear, but still, we have a God whose love will sustain us.  Our life may be wrought with complete despair and devastation, but the Lord is still faithful to us.  When everyone else has abandoned us, God still wraps His arms around us in compassion and does not let go.  He will never allow us to be consumed.  He will sustain us through it all until we see Him face to face.
