Looking Through Someone

Posted on: 7-15-112016

Several years ago a family member said something to me that I still think of often.  She said, “You live in a white picket fence world and have no idea what the rest of the world faces”  From her perspective, she mistakenly assumed that everything in my life was just as it should be.  From her vantage point, she didn’t see the struggles, the stresses, the hardships, and the problems that I faced every day.  Many of us make the same assumptions about those around us.  It’s easy to take a quick peek into their lives and think that they have it all together or that they are not drowning in the trials of life.  The song “Save My Life” by Sidewalk Prophets addresses this very issue:

We’ve met half a dozen times
I know your name I know you don’t know mine
But I won’t hold that against you

You come here every Friday night
I take your order and try to be polite
And hide what I’ve been going through

If you looked me right in the eye
Would you see the pain deep inside
Would you take the time to

Tell me what I need to hear
Tell me that I’m not forgotten
Show me there’s a God
Who can be more than all I’ve ever wanted
‘Cause right now I need a little hope
I need to know that I’m not alone
Maybe God is calling you tonight
To tell me something
That might save my life

I’m the pastor at your church
For all these years you’ve listened to my words
You think I know all the answers

But I’ve got doubts and questions too
Behind this smile I’m really just like you
Afraid and tired and insecure

If you look me right in the eye
Would you see the real me inside
Would you take the time to

It’s so easy to just go through our lives consumed by our own problems or focused on our own self that we fail to see the truth right before our eyes…the truth that everyone we encounter has trials, tribulations, heartaches, and heart breaks and the truth that we all need someone to share those burdens with.  Deep down, we all need to know that others care about us enough to truly see us instead of just looking through us.  We all also need someone to tell us that there is Someone who loves us immensely and Someone who can help us through every single trauma we ever face.
