Genie in a Bottle

Posted on: 7-15-112016

When I was in junior high, we had a monthly newspaper that was produced by students.  One of the things in every edition was interviews with different students.  In almost all of the interviews, the question was asked, “If you had three wishes, what would they be?”  The first two answers varied, but the third answer was almost always the same…”three more wishes”.  Most of us have heard of the genie in the magic lamp that comes out and grants three wishes to the person who freed him from the lamp.  And most of us have heard the same third answer that the students interviewed gave when asking the genie for wishes.  We all want more wishes.  Sometimes, I think we treat God like that genie in the lamp.  We can have the mindset that He is nothing more than the God who grants wishes.  Our prayers can be nothing more than a list of things we wish He would grant us.  And at the end of those prayers, we tack on “and three more wishes” so that we never run out of wishes.  God doesn’t want to be a “genie in the lamp” who we just call on when we have a wish.  He wants to be so much more to us.  He wants to be the God we call on when we have good news to share.  He wants to be the One we call when our heart is breaking.  He wants to be the first One we run to for any and everything.  He wants to celebrate our victories and help us pick up the pieces when we fail.  He wants us to call on Him for guidance and direction.  He wants us to ask Him the hard questions of life and allow Him to answer them for us.  And even though He is not a genie in a magic lamp, He wants us to share our hopes, our dreams, and our wishes with Him. You can be completely confident that what God grants you will be much more amazing than anything the genie could ever give you.

“The Lord be magnified who delights in the prosperity of His servant.” Psalm 35:27
