Speaking Long After You Die

“By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous.  God testifying of his gifts, and through it he being dead still speaks.” Hebrews 11:4 (italics mine)

As I was reading through Hebrews this week, the final five words of this verse caught my attention.  Because Abel gave a more excellent sacrifice, he was noted for his righteousness and God testified of his faithfulness in giving.  Thousands of years later, Abel is still speaking to us through that gift.  How amazing is it that his righteousness has left its imprint on generation after generation after generation and will continue to do so until this world is no longer.  The same is true of all heroes of the faith in the Bible.  Every time we read their stories, they are still speaking.  Every time their words or actions leave a mark on us, they are being heard loud and clear.  Even though their physical body has long since decayed, what they did for God still lives. We are no different than these heroes of the faith.  We may not be recorded in the Bible, but everything we do for God is recorded by Him.  Because He is eternal, everything we do on His behalf is eternal.  Whatever we do that is invested in Him has the potential to change lives for as long as this earth remains.  We may not know the impact we have on the world, but I’m sure Abel had no idea that the faith of his sacrifice to God would land him in the book of Hebrews “Hall of Faith” and that thousands of years later, people would still be affected by his actions.  What we do matters!  You never know whose life may be changed because of your actions.  Live a life of faith and you can be assured that your actions will live on long after you are gone.
