At His Word

“But Simon answered and said to Him, ‘Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” Luke 5:5

The Scripture above comes nestled in the story of when Jesus called His first disciples.  Simon (later known as Peter) and his fellow fishermen had fished all night and come up empty-handed.  They were probably exhausted and frustrated, not to mention discouraged.  Fishing wasn’t just a hobby to these men…it was their livelihood.  No fish equaled no money.  No fish equaled no food.  Their families were depending on them and they probably felt as if they had failed them.  They had given up and had already set to cleaning all of their nets for another day.  And then Jesus shows up on the scene.  He asks Simon to launch Him out a little distance from the shore so He can teach the crowd that is following Him.  Simon does as He asks.  When He finishes speaking, He tells Simon to go out into the deep and then drop the nets for a catch.  Now, you know Simon is tired and ready to just call it a day.  He’s dropped the net no telling how many times that day only to come up empty-handed.  I’m sure he wondered what good it would do to drop the nets again. I’m sure he wanted to object, but he chose to do what we should all do…he chose to take Jesus at His word.  And because Simon took Jesus at His word, he experienced Jesus’ power in a mighty way.  When they let the nets down, they brought in a catch that broke their nets.  When they let the nets down, they brought in a catch that started to sink the boats.  When they let the nets down, they brought in a catch that caused Simon to fall at Jesus’ knees and worship Him. When they let the nets down, they brought in a catch that opened Simon’s eyes to the fact that he was a sinful man in the presence of a holy God.  What would happen if we took Jesus at His word?  Would we see Him do things beyond our wildest imagination?  Would we see Him perform miracles right before our eyes?  Would we see things that would cause us to fall at His feet and worship Him?  Would we see things that would cause us to recognize our own sinfulness and His holiness?  We can take Him at His word, you know?  He is 100% trustworthy!  He has never and will never fail us.  Take Him at His word and see what happens.  I guarantee you will not regret it!
