What’s In the Road?

Posted on: 7-15-112016

My two-year old grandson loves trains.  He can spend hours a day building the tracks, running his trains on the track, taking the tracks apart, and then rebuilding the tracks to start the cycle over again.  For the past several weeks, he has been fascinated with blocking the tracks with some sort of object and then asking any and every one who will listen, “What’s in the road?”  The answer we have all learned by heart to give him is, “a big tree.”  No matter what the object is, he pretends that it’s a big tree.  He then takes great delight in knocking the “tree” off of the tracks with every bit of force he can muster so the train can get moving again.  As he and I played this game for at least the hundredth time yesterday, it occurred to me that each of us has “big trees” in our path blocking us from doing what God has called us to do.  These “big trees” may be fear, lack of confidence, lack of faith, lack of discipline, pride, etc.  What these “big trees” boil down to is sin that is in our way, stopping us from doing what we were called to do.  And the only way we will ever make any progress is to knock those “big trees” down!  We have to confront our sin head on and knock it out of our way with everything in us.  And the only way we can do that is to call on the One who has the power to knock down our sin and that person is Jesus.  We can swing with all of our might at those “big trees”, but we are no match on our own.  If we allow Jesus to do the swinging, however, those “big trees” will be knocked as far as the east is from the west, never to be seen again!
