As Happy As You Make Up Your Mind To Be

I recently read a story about an elderly lady whose husband had just passed away.  She was legally blind, so after his passing, she had to move to a nursing home. The young lady who escorted her to her new room described the room to her as the elderly lady slowly maneuvered her walker towards the room.  “I love it,” she exclaimed with great enthusiasm.  The young woman asked her how she knew she loved it since she hadn’t even seen it yet.  The wise woman replied, “That doesn’t have anything to do with it.  Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.  Whether I like the my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it’s how I arrange my mind.  I’ve already decided to love it.” She continued on to tell the young lady that she made the decision every single morning to thank God for all of the parts of her body that still worked instead of complaining about the ones that didn’t.  Wow!  What an amazing example this lady is!  I think we can all learn something from her incredible attitude.  It’s so easy to complain about anything and everything and in the midst of all of our complaining, we fail to see the innumerable things we have to be grateful for.

“Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
