Treasured Possession

I recently read a story about Thomas Edison that really touched my heart.  This is the story:

“One day Thomas Edison came home and gave a paper to his mother.  He told her, ‘My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to only give it to my mother.’ His mother’s eyes were tearful as she read the letter out loud to her child. ‘Your son is a genius.  This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers for training him.  Please teach him yourself.’  Many, many years later Edison’s mother died and he was now one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day he was looking through old family things. Suddenly, he saw a folded paper in the corner of a drawer in a desk.  He took it and opened it up.  On the paper was written, ‘Your son is addled (mentally ill).  We won’t let him come to school any more.’  Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary, ‘Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century.’

As I read this, tears fell from my eyes.  What an incredible story!  This mother saw her son as a genius, even if the world saw him as mentally ill.  Edison became one of the greatest minds the world has ever known because he learned to see himself as she saw him.   I wonder how differently he would have turned out if his mother had allowed the school to determine how she treated him and how she viewed him.  Would the world have missed out on one of the greatest minds it has ever known?

Do you know how powerful your belief, support, and encouragement can be in someone else’s life?  Do you realize that you can invest in someone in such a way that you change their life forever?  Do you know that there are people in your life that are desperate to hear your words of affirmation?  On the other hand, maybe you are the one who is desperately waiting for someone to speak belief, support, encouragement, and affirmation into your life.  Maybe you are living way below your potential because that is the message you have received from the world.  Maybe you feel like you are not important because no one has ever told you that you are.  Maybe no one in this world thinks that you are valuable, but your heavenly Father thinks that your are of infinite value.  No one on this earth may recognize your talents, but your heavenly Father does.  No one may be there to cheer you on, but He is.  You are His creation and you are so important to Him.  He treasures you and delights in you.  You are the most valuable thing in this world to Him.  In fact, you are so valuable to Him that He died to show you exactly how He feels about you.  You are beloved by your Father and He is longing to have a relationship with you so that He can tell you how much you mean to Him.

“For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God.  Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be His own special treasure.” Deuteronomy 7:6
