Light of the World

“Blowing out someone else’s candle will not make yours shine any brighter.” Anonymous

I ran across this quote two different times today.  Normally, when I randomly come across something  like this more than once in a short period of time, I figure God is trying to get a message to me. There is so much truth in this one statement.  We often times buy the lie that blowing out someone else’s candle makes ours shine brighter, but that is not true.  All we accomplish by doing this is reducing the amount of light that is present in the darkness.  Think about the amount of light provided by one single candle in a completely dark room.  Now, think about how much light is added if another candle is brought into the darkness.  What if multiple candles are brought into the room?  The more candles we add, the greater the amount of light, and the more light we have always leads to a diminishing of the darkness.  The only way the darkness will ever be overcome is to flood it with light.  We, as Christians, have a responsibility to illuminate the darkness of this world by exemplifying the light of Christ.  We need to celebrate the fact that others are shining their light for Him in the darkness and work along side them to provide as much light as possible.  We can’t afford to “blow out someone else’s candle”, just to make our own shine brighter…it just doesn’t work that way.  God never intended us to work against each other, but instead to work together for His Kingdom.

“You are the light of the world.”  Matthew 5:14
