He Calms the Storm

We have seen quite an array of severe weather today where I live. Thousands are without power, tree limbs cover the yards in my neighborhood, and water stands all over our yards. Pictures have shown up all over the news, as well as social media, of two tornadoes, in very close proximity to each other, touching down at the same time over a major body of water near us, as well as a train being derailed and knocked off of a bridge not too far from us. Even as I write this, thunder rolls outside and flashes of lightning can be seen out my window. The rain has slacked off for now, but from what I see on the weather, there are more severe storms headed our way. As I see the power of these storms, I am reminded of the story in the Bible when Jesus and the disciples faced a storm as they sailed on the sea. The disciples were frightened, but Jesus was sound asleep. He wasn’t worried about the raging storm at all. He knew what the disciples hadn’t quite figured out yet…He wasn’t worried about the storm because He knew Who controlled the storm. When the disciples begged Him to do something, He rebuked the wind and the sea and immediately, there was a great calm. Maybe the storms you are facing today are not weather related storms…maybe they are emotional hurricanes or spiritual tsunamis. You may be facing the storm of divorce, bankruptcy, death of a loved one, physical illness, prodigal child, loss of a job, etc. You may find yourself panicking, terrified about your situation and when you seek Jesus, you find Him sleeping. He is not worried about the storms you face, just as He wasn’t worried about the storm the disciples faced because, no matter what your storm, He knows Who controls it too!

“Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” Matthew 8:26
