Oh, we are going to be here all night with this!

My nephew and his wife have been working with their twin 8 year old daughters on the importance of reading their Bibles and saying a prayer each night before bed.  A few nights ago he shared that one of the girls was having her turn saying her prayers and she listed about twenty family members she was thankful for.  He then prompted her to pray for people that may be sick or need help.  Finally, he reminded her that we also need to ask forgiveness for the things we have done wrong to which she replied, “Oh, we are going to be here all night with this!”  Of course, she had them rolling with laughter and everyone else he’s shared the story with, I’m sure.  I know I laughed when I heard about it!  Although what she said is funny, there is also a lot of serious truth tucked into her words.  If you’re anything like me, you may very well be there all night if you took the time to confess all of your sins in a given day.  One of two things usually happens when I try to confess everything at one time: I either get distracted and my mind starts wandering because the list is so long or I get completely disgusted with myself because the list is so long.  It’s a tough thing to take an honest look at yourself and know you fall so short of God’s standards.  It can be humiliating, embarrassing, and frustrating.  The guilt can be overwhelming.  We look at our sin and wonder why in the world God would even bother with us, but God looks at our sin and sees us perfected through the blood of His Son, Jesus.  He is never disgusted with us, nor does He ever do anything to humiliate or embarrass us.  He does not heap guilt and condemnation upon us.  Instead, He heaps love and acceptance upon us.  We are free to confess our sins to Him with no fear of rejection or disapproval.  Yes, there are consequences for our actions, but they are always issued with mercy and grace from the One who loves us no matter what we have done.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…” Romans 8:1
