When Your Faith is Shaken

Posted on: 7-15-112015

Last night my husband and I went to see the movie “A Matter of Faith”.  It’s the story of a young, Christian woman who goes off to college and is enrolled in a biology class taught by a professor who is a strong advocate of evolution.  After hearing many of his compelling arguments, the young woman starts to question the Christian beliefs she was taught growing up. Her father notices the change in her and eventually goes to speak to the professor concerning what is being taught in his classroom.  The professor challenges the father to a debate and the father accepts.  The daughter begs her father not to continue with the debate.  She is embarrassed and worries about what everyone will think of her.  Day by day her faith grows weaker and weaker and her Christian beliefs crumble into a million pieces.  Most of us have been in her shoes.  Our beliefs have been challenged and our faith has wavered.  Our doubts may creep in when a loved one dies, a job is lost, a medical diagnosis comes back with bad news, a child turns out to be a prodigal, or any number of earth shattering events. No matter what the circumstances are that lead to our doubts, the battle is unrelenting. Try as you might to hang on in faith, your lose your grip with every breath.  Each day the fight grows harder and harder and you grow weaker and weaker.  Pretty soon, there is no fight left in you and you are ready to give up.  And just when you can’t go on one more step, in steps the One who can erase all of your doubts, strengthen your faith, and remind you why you believe what you believe.  He can take the test you’ve just encountered and make it into a beautiful part of your testimony.  And when you look back, you will see that He was right there all along, guarding you and protecting you each step of the way.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
