The Pesky Fly

Posted on: 7-15-112014

My mom shared a story with me yesterday that I thought was funny, but also a good reminder for us. She said that the night before, a pesky fly kept buzzing around everyone at the dinner table. She said she had chased the fly around with a fly swatter, but to no avail. During the meal, she received a phone call, so she stepped away from the table to answer it. While she was on the phone, she heard everyone at the dinner table burst into laughter. When she returned, she asked what everyone had been laughing at. My niece told her that my dad had taken a part of a cookie that he was eating and crumbled it up on the table. When she asked him what he was doing, he told her he was luring the fly over to him so he could whack it with the fly swatter and take care of it once and for all. Everyone got a big kick out of this! I asked her if it worked and she said she wasn’t sure, but she didn’t have to deal with the fly anymore that night, so either his plan worked or the fly went into hiding. What my dad did to the fly is the same thing Satan does to us. He “crumbles a cookie on the table to lure us over” so to speak. He entices us with something that looks appetizing to us and draws us towards him. He may use money, power, success, material possessions, status, alcohol, food, or any other number of things to lure us near. Since we’re so focused on whatever he’s using to draw us towards him, we don’t even realize he’s waiting in the wings to attack us. Just as we start to enjoy our “cookie”, Satan comes out of hiding and whacks us. Don’t be deceived by his tempting treats…they may look delectable, but they are really nothing more than a distraction.

“Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
