Last night my husband and I saw “Beauty and the Beast” at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans.  For those not familiar with the story, here is a brief synopsis.  A prince has a spell cast on him and is rendered a beast for the rest of his life unless he can learn to truly love someone and have that person also truly love him.  A young girl, Belle, happens upon the castle where the beast lives when looking for her father.  At first, she is terrified of the beast, but over time, Belle learns to look beyond his appearance and see the beast for what’s in his heart. Eventually, the spell is broken and the beast once again becomes a prince.  As we watched the play last night, I thought about Belle’s ability to look beyond the outward appearance and focus on what was in the heart.  In the world we live in, this character trait is a rarity.  We are bombarded with message after message telling us that the outward appearance is more important than what’s inside a person’s heart.  We spend millions of dollars on cosmetics, surgeries, gym memberships, clothing, etc. to make sure we look a certain way, and often fail to take a look at our inner beauty.  Those with good looks often get farther ahead than those who don’t.  It’s a sad reality…we are judged by our appearance every single day!  For those who are not considered drop dead gorgeous or extremely handsome, this can be very discouraging.  However, there is One who is like Belle.  He isn’t swayed by our outer appearance…it is our inner beauty that God looks at.  God show no preference to those who are physically beautiful as does the world.  What He loves is a heart that is pure, compassionate, tender, loving, kind, gentle, humble, and seeking to be more like Him.  To Him, a heart that longs to be like Him is the most beautiful sight in the world.  This is the beauty we should focus on in ourselves, as well as the beauty we should look for in others.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  1 Samuel 16:7
