Aside

Tonight, my husband and I had a conversation about how sometimes just showing up is over half the battle.  He used the example of Samson slaying 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey (see Judges 15:15 – 16) and the example of David slaying Goliath with a sling and a stone (see 1 Samuel 17:48 – 50).  Both Samson and David stood before an enemy that was much stronger and more powerful.  The odds were not stacked in their favor.  In fact, in the eyes of the world, they were probably both considered as good as dead. Both Samson and David were human, just as we are, so I would have to think that they were at least a little fearful of the task before them.  However, that fear didn’t stop them because they had something even more powerful than their fear…their faith!  They both knew that God was more than able to take care of them.  And because they knew that God was more than able to take care of them, they showed up!  Even if it was with sweaty palms, knees knocking, and a heart beating out of their chest with trepidation, they showed up.  And when they showed up, so did God!  He never intended for them to go into the battle alone.  He planned to be there all along.  He knew they couldn’t defeat their enemy single-handedly, but He never intended for them to…He intended to do it through them.  He knew the odds were stacked against them in the world’s eyes, but then again, He doesn’t look through the world’s eyes because He isn’t limited by the constraints of the world.  He knew in their own strength they could never defeat their enemy, so He gave them His own strength.  He knew they were no match for their enemy, but He also knew that Samson and David believed that their enemy was no match for their God, so He took their faith and slayed the “giants” that stood before them.  We look at the stories and say that Samson overcame his enemies with the jawbone of a donkey and that David overcame Goliath with a sling and a stone, but in actuality, they overcame their enemy with their faith in God.  We, too, can slay the “giants” that stand before us with our faith.  There is nothing so powerful that our faith in God cannot overcome it.  There is no one who stands in opposition to us that our faith in God cannot slay in the blink of an eye.  We may be terrified to stand before those enemies, but in faith, all we have to do is show up.  And when we show up, so will God!  And when God shows up, victory is ours for the taking!

“But Jesus looked at them and  said to them, ‘With men, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.”  Matthew 19:26

Just Show Up
