A New Beginning

Posted on: 7-15-112014

Today is the first day of 2014! For many people, this is a day that brings great excitement because it is a day that symbolizes a new beginning.  It is a chance to wipe the slate clean and start over.  The setbacks, mistakes, and defeats of the previous year can be put behind us and the infinite possibilities of the new year can be our focus.  The chance to start again invigorates us and gives us hope.  We feel like we can accomplish whatever we set out to do.  We feel as if no mountain is too high to climb, no ocean is too wide to cross, and no task is too difficult to overcome.  And all of this excites us…at least until about a week or two in when we come to the harsh reality that, even in the new year, the tasks before us may be more than we want to fight.  The diet we were going to follow isn’t near as much fun as what everyone else is eating, the exercise routine we were going to follow was fine until it left our muscles so sore that we could hardly walk, the savings plan we were going to follow was fine until we went to the mall and found the one thing that we couldn’t possibly live without…you get the point.  We all make it for a few days and then the “new” wears off and with it goes the excitement that we felt on January 1st.  So, where does all of this leave us?  Right back where we were on December 31st!  There is a new beginning, however, that is unlike any other new beginning we will ever experience!  It is a new beginning in Christ. When we discover Christ, He promises us a new beginning. He promises that old things will pass away and all things will be made new.  Once we accept Him, we will never be the same as we were before.  Does that mean we will immediately stop doing everything that we shouldn’t be doing and start doing only what is right?  Absolutely not! We will continue to have setbacks, make mistakes, and encounter defeats, but in His eyes, we have been made new. He sees us, not covered in our failures, but covered in the blood of His Son, Jesus.  It is through His blood that we are made new.  Unlike us, God doesn’t get discouraged a couple of weeks down the line and decide that this “new” beginning isn’t worth His time or effort anymore.  He doesn’t change His mind when the going gets tough.  He doesn’t allow anything to keep Him from accomplishing His goal which is to continually renew us and transform us into His image.  If, on the start of this brand new year, you’re looking for a new beginning that will have eternal results, look no farther than Christ.  Allow Him to be your new beginning and your life will never be the same again.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have been made new.”  2 Corinthians 5:17
