Do What You’re Supposed to Do

Posted on: 7-15-112012

Recently, I’ve had several conversations with friends and co-workers about the fact that life would be so much easier if everyone just did what they were supposed to do. However, there are people in all of our lives that don’t do what they are supposed to do and because they don’t do what they’re supposed to do, sometimes we suffer for it.  It’s easy to get upset or annoyed with those who cause us stress or difficulties, but if the truth be known, we are just as guilty as they are in some form or fashion.  Think about it…do you think God may ever wish you would do what you were supposed to do?  Speaking for myself, I can say with absolute certainty, that He has wished I would do what I should on more than one occasion.  Do you think He wishes you would obey Him immediately instead of fighting Him every step of the way only to find out once you do obey that it was the best thing you could’ve done? Do you think He ever wishes you wouldn’t go down the road you’re traveling on and would instead follow Him? Do you think He ever wishes you would trust Him and let Him help you instead of being so hard-headed and determined to do everything yourself? Do you think He ever wishes you would love your enemies and pray for them instead of harboring hatred for them in your heart? Do you think He ever wishes you would forgive instead of being locked in the prison of unforgiveness? God loves us unconditionally.  What we do or don’t do in no way changes His love for us.  He loves us when we do what we’re supposed to do and He loves us when we don’t.  However, because He loves us so much, He wants us to do what we’re supposed to do because He knows that it’s what’s best for us.  He will love us when we don’t obey Him, but He will also issue consequences for our disobedience.  He expects no less from us…He expects us to love those who don’t do what they’re supposed to, even if their actions result in consequences.  For myself, I’m going to try to learn to see myself in those people who don’t do what they’re supposed to do to help me remember that there are a lot of ways that I don’t do what I should.  I hope if I am reminded of this, I will be more mindful to do what I should.

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”  James 4:17
