Grace For the Moment

Posted on: 7-15-112012

As Christians, we use the word “grace” a lot…it’s in many songs, prayers, and you’ll find it discussed in some form or fashion in almost every Bible study that is held.  There are entire books written on the subject of grace…we have an abundance of information about it, but I still wonder if we really grasp its true meaning.  One definition of grace is “getting what you don’t deserve” which certainly fits the grace that was extended to us on the cross.  I think this is the grace we’re most familiar with…it’s called “saving” grace…the grace that saved us from our sins.  This is the grace Paul referred to in Ephesians 2:8 – 9:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

There is another kind of grace that is equally as important in our lives…”sustaining grace”…this is the grace God supplies us to get through specific times and situations in our lives. This is the grace that gets us out of the bed in the morning when we really just want to throw the cover over our head and not face the daunting circumstances that await us.  This is the grace that helps you put one foot in front of the other and continue on the path that has been set before you when you do not think you can go one more step.  This is the grace that helps you endure whatever hardship you’re encountering when you think that you cannot take it one more moment.  Sustaining grace is a type of grace that God administers to us in proportion to our need at that moment.  For example, someone may think that they would never be able to stand up under persecution, but if put to the test, they can endure it because God has given them “grace for the moment” to enable them to do what they need to do.  This is the type of grace God describes in 2 Corinthians 12:9

“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

For those of you who have not received Christ as your Savior, I pray His saving grace upon you above all things.  For all, I pray His sustaining grace to see you through the trials and tribulations of this life.  No matter what your situation, you can never deplete His supply of grace, so boldy and with assurance, ask Him to lavish it upon you.  There’s nothing He would rather do!
