It is Finished

Last night I wrote about a major project that I was working on.  Tonight, I am happy to report that I completed the first phase of the project this afternoon.  I was so excited when I finished.  I marched straight into my bedroom where my husband was watching TV and proudly announced, “It is finished!”  These are the same words that Jesus said right before He gave up His spirit and died on the cross.  He accomplished what He set out to do.  The debt of our sin was paid. The need for sacrifice was taken care of for the rest of time. However, when He said the words “It is finished” it was really only just beginning. Yes, the work of the cross was finished, but  it was the beginning of life for us…abundant life on earth (John 10:10) and eternal life in heaven with God (John 3:16). It was the beginning of life with no debt of sin nor the guilt and condemnation that comes with it (Romans 8:1).  It was the beginning of life with hope (Colossians 1:27).  It was the beginning of life with the Holy Spirit coming to dwell within us (John 14:26).  It was the beginning of life with peace (John 14:27).  Because Jesus finished what He set out to accomplish, our debt has been paid and we have been made right with God forever.   All we have to do is believe in what He accomplished on the cross and ask Him into our hearts.  Will you allow what He finished to give you a new beginning?

“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”  John 19:30
