Paying the Ultimate Price

Posted on: 7-15-112012

In October of 1862, ten POWs in Palmyra were chosen to be executed.  One of the men chosen was William T. Humphrey, a husband and father of several children. Humphrey’s wife desperately begged for her husband’s life to be spared.  Finally, Hiram Smith, a young man with no wife or children, decided to offer to take the place of Humphrey.  He reasoned that it would be better for a single man to die than a man with a family to look after.  There is a statue at Mount Pleasant Church that reads, “This monument is dedicated to the memory of Hiram Smith, the hero that sleeps beneath the sod here who was shot at Palmyra, October 17, 1862 as a substitute for William Humphrey, my father (G.W. Humphrey). Smith paid the ultimate price for Humphrey…he gave his life so that Humphrey may live.  I bet Humphrey and his family never forgot the sacrifice that was made so that he could live.  We, too, have been sentenced to death. And we, too, have had Someone to step up to take our place.  Jesus willingly gave His life up on the cross so that we would not have to die.  He became our substitute so that we could live, both here on earth and in heaven for all of eternity.  There was never a greater price paid than the price that Jesus paid for us…a price we will never fully understand, but one we should never forget.  And as a monument to Him, we should live our lives to show others the sacrifice He made for us.

“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:20
