Pack Your Bags, Guilt…You’re Moving Out

Posted on: 7-15-112012

One of Satan’s greatest weapons is guilt.  He tries desperately to keep us tied to all of the mistakes we’ve made in the past, to all of the would’ve, could’ve, should’ves that we wish we had the chance to do over. He’s very smart…he knows that if he can keep us living in the past, then we cannot live in the present or even dream of the future.  He knows that when he reminds us of all of our failures, mistakes, and weaknesses, then he’s got us, because we’re really our own worst enemy.  All he needs to do is plant a little seed of guilt in us, and we will make sure we nurture it until it is a full-grown garden of defeat.  The saddest thing about this is that we let him get away with it! We allow him to deceive us and make us think that we’re beyond hope.  We allow him to use our past to destroy our present and future. We allow him to bury us so deep in guilt and regret that we can no longer even see light.  Notice that I am saying “we allow him” to do these things.  We have a choice! We don’t have to allow him to do any of these things.  If we are in Christ, we’re freed from our past.  2 Corinthians 5:17 says that, “…old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new…” God did not send Jesus to the cross to pay the debt of our sins only to have us live plagued by guilt over them.  God wants us to confess our sins, allow Him to forgive us for them, and then move on.  After all, if He can forgive us, shouldn’t we be able to forgive ourselves? Once we confess and receive forgiveness, God remembers our sins no more.  He doesn’t keep a list of them by His throne just waiting to condemn us again and again for them.   I love what Max Lucado says concerning the subject of guilt.  He says, “When grace moves in, guilt moves out.” That’s so true…when we are filled with the grace of God, there is no room for guilt!  It has to pack its bags and get out.  So, if guilt is doing a number on you, you may need to tell it to start packing!

“There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”  Romans 8:1
