Choosing the Right Path

Posted on: 7-15-112012

We probably all know people in our lives that are headed down the wrong path…the path that we know is going to lead to a lot of misery and heartache.  There is a particular person in my life right now that I love more than anything that is going down that road at lightening speed, and it absolutely breaks my heart.  No amount of begging, pleading, reasoning, or talking can deter her from doing what she wants to do.  She is determined that she knows best and that the path she’s taking is not going to have the consequences and heartache that I keep warning her about.  Unfortunately, the path she’s on is not the path God intended for her.  I may not know the exact consequences, but I can say with absolute confidence, that the path she’s taking is going in the opposite direction from the one God planned for her.  I pray over and over for two specific things for her: one, that her eyes will be opened to the truth of what she’s doing and how it is not what God says is best for her and two, that God will extend grace and mercy on her when He allows the consequences to come.  God has such amazing plans for us, yet we often settle for so much less!  We decide to do things our own way because His timing doesn’t line up with our timing and we grow impatient.  We give in to pressures from the world and convince ourselves that it will be okay. We know that we’re living in disobedience to what God says, but we pretend that we’re not or we make excuses for it and tell ourself that God will let it slide.  We depend on the Scriptures that say God is forgiving, full of grace and mercy, and that His love is unconditional, yet pretend that His Word never mentions His wrath or consequences for our sin.  Yes, Jesus died on the cross and His death paid for all of our sin if we have accepted Him as our Savior. He is forgiving when we confess our sins, He is full of grace and mercy, and His love is unconditional.  However, He is a God who hates sin because He knows it will destroy us!  He knows that sin leads us down a path that will harm us!  He is a God who loves us enough to discipline us and give us consequences when necessary to break those chains of sin.  A nd, when you are His child, He will never let you get away with it!  He will do whatever it takes to get you off of that path and back onto the path He planned for you!

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”  James 4:17
