Just A Little More Time Needed

Posted on: 7-15-112012

The following is a parable told by Jesus that I confess I’ve never paid much attention to, but should have!

“He also spoke this parable, ‘A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.  Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none.  Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well.  But if not, after that you can cut it down.”  Luke 13:6-9

When I consider how impatient I can be with other people, I realize I am like the man who wanted to cut down the tree!  I, like the man, may fail to realize that there is still hope!  I can easily decide that I have waited long enough for that person to show some kind of growth and just give up on them! It’s not a very Christlike attitude, I know, but, I have to confess that when I look in the mirror, I can see the man from the story looking right back at me! Who I wish I saw in the mirror would be the keeper of the vineyard…the one who is patient and willing to extend more time for the tree to produce fruit!  He knows something that I usually forget…that there is always time for something or someone to change!  He knows that, given enough time and care, growth will happen!  If the vinekeeper were to look in a mirror, he would see that he was a reflection of Christ…patient, merciful, full of grace, and never-ending hope!

Is there anyone in your life that you’re just about to give up on? someone who you have lost hope in?  Don’t give up!  Hold onto the fact that God is still working in them…He’s not finished with them yet!  Extend them the same kind of patience God gives you each day!  Remember that you, too, are a work in progress! God doesn’t lose hope in you, so in order to be a reflection of Him, you must not give up on others.
