A Generous Heart

Posted on: 7-15-112011

A few nights ago, we were watching the TV show “Chopped” on the Food Network.  If you’re not familiar with the show, it basically starts off with four chefs competing to win $10, 000.00.  They compete in three rounds…appetizer, entrée, and dessert. They are given mystery baskets to create their items for each category with four ingredients that usually do not go together at all or are very unusual. After each round, three judges are given the food and ultimately “chop” one chef.  The particular episode I am referring to was a “redemption” episode.  This meant that all four chefs that were on had already been on a previous show and had been “chopped.”  I immediately was in favor of one particular chef winning because when they introduced him they referenced the fact that he was a Christian and ran a Christian restaurant in New York.  He said that no matter what the outcome was, he gave all the glory to God.  So, that being said, I was rooting for him from the get go.  Then, another chef captured my heart.  She was hoping to win so that she could visit her grandmother overseas who was very ill.  She had planned to use the money for the same thing on the first episode she competed in, but did not win, so had not been able to make the trip.  She said that this was basically her last hope of seeing her grandmother.  My heart was very torn for her, so I wanted her to win too.  As it turned out, both of the chefs I was rooting for ended up in the very last round, competing against each other for the $10, 000.00.  I had decided during the show that I really wanted the woman to win so she could take her trip, but I still really liked the guy.  When they revealed the winner, it was the Christian chef.  I was very happy for him, but also sad for her.  The judges said their good-byes to her and she turned to walk away.  As she did, the Christian chef said, “Wait.  I didn’t really expect to win.”  He then proceeded to tell her that he wanted to help her go see her grandmother and that he was going to give her the money from his winnings to be able to take the trip!  She was crying, he was crying, all the judges were crying, and I was crying!  What an amazing moment that must have been for the lady!  What an amazing testimony of his Christlike character displayed for everyone who was watching!  We all have opportunities each day to make a difference in other people’s lives.  They may not be as grand as what he did, but the small things are just as important.  We never know the impact that we can have on others just by being generous and giving.

“The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.”  Proverbs 11:25

“”Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may hold on eternal life.”  1 Timothy 6:18 – 19
