Facing Your Fears

I read this story in my devotional yesterday:

“A tourist was driving through the countryside when he saw an old farmer sitting in a rocking chair on his porch.  Behind the farmhouse was 75 acres of land.  The tourist asked, ‘Is that your land?’ ‘Yep,’ he replied.  ‘Well, wat are you doing with it?  Thinking of growing cotton?’ the tourist asked. ‘ Nope, I’m afraid the boll weevils will get it,’ said the farmer.  ‘What about corn?’ the tourist asked. ‘ No, I’m afraid the locusts will eat it,’ he replied. ‘Well,’ the tourist asked, ‘what about raising cattle?’ The farmer said, ‘I’m afraid the price of beef might go down.’ ‘So, what are you going to do with all that prime farmland?’ the tourist asked. ‘Nothing,’ said the farmer, ‘I’m just going to play it safe.’

How often do we live our lives with exactly the same attitude as the farmer?  How often do we do nothing because we fear something will go wrong?  How often are we wasting the “prime farmland” that God has given us by just sitting on the porch and playing it safe?  In playing it safe, we may never get hurt, but think of what we give up in return…all of the amazing things that God has planned for us!  We will never know what God can do and wants to do until we let Him!  I saw a church sign the other day that said, “It’s risky to go out on a limb, but that’s where all the fruit is.”  That’s very true!  We never live lives that produce fruit unless we actually go out on a limb, so to speak.  When we follow God, we can be assured of one thing…He will be right there with us!  If we fail, He will pick us up, dust us off, and get us going again!  And we need to realize this…there is no greater risk than disobeying God!  When we understand this truth, it puts all of our other fears in perspective, doesn’t it?

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7
