Time to Take Out the Trash

Posted on: 7-15-112011

A couple of weeks ago, I heard a sermon by Dr. Tony Evans.  He made a comparison that I have been thinking about ever since.  He talked about the garbage we collect each day in our home.  He pointed out that, after a certain amount of time, the stench from the garbage will start to permeate throughout our home unless we get rid of it.  From the outside, we can have an immaculately manicured yard, but inside, the smell is horrid.  He also reminded us what else will happen if we don’t get rid of the garbage…the smell will invite unwelcome rodents and insects into our home.  Now, common sense tells us that in order to get rid of the odor and the pests, the garbage has to be taken away.  We can’t just hide the garbage and hope that the problem take care of itself.  It may mask the problem, but it does not alleviate it.  Even if we stick the garbage in a closet or up in the attic, eventually we will be able to smell it and the pests certainly will be able to find it.  Dr. Evans compared the garbage in our homes to the garbage in our lives…our sin.  In much the same way, the sin in our lives has a rancid odor and unless we deal with it and get rid of it, it will permeate throughout our whole life.  We usually do a good job of hiding the garbage in our lives from the people around us.  From the outward appearance, we look like everything is just as it should be.  No one would suspect that inside we reek from the effects of our “garbage”.  When we don’t deal with our sin, we also invite unwelcome guests into our “home.”  Sin is an open door for Satan and his forces to enter into our lives.  And, just as the pests we can battle in our house, these evil forces are just waiting for an open door to get in.  And just like pests, they can multiply in the blink of an eye!   We can try to hide our sin, but we don’t fool Satan or his forces of evil…they will leave as long as there is one piece of garbage left to feast on.  And no matter how hard we try to hide our sin or disguise it, we will never fool God!  He knows every single wretched piece of it.  He can sniff it out when no one else can!  And until we get rid of the garbage in our lives, we will have to deal with its effects!  Fortunately for us, however, our Savior and Lord is a Master Trash Collector!  He can take our garbage and get rid of it forever! So, what are you waiting for?  It’s time to take out the trash!
